COLORADO 2024

ARKANSAS RIVER

SALIDA, COLORADO

August 24th, 2024

Our last day of fly fishing on the Colorado tour was on the Arkansas River below Salida, Colorado, and it turned out to be our best day.  It was such a pleasure to be able to fish with an old friend, Mark Richardson, who I last fished with in 2015.  There are lots of fly fishing guides but there are very few truly "professional" fly fishing guides and Mark is one of those.  On this day, on this river, I would not have even considered fishing a dry fly since there were no bugs coming off and no fish rising.  Nevertheless Mark set up #16 Parachute Adams under a #14 Madam X double dry fly rig and on my first cast the flys moved maybe two feet and a trout did his best to eat the Adams.  As you might guess, I set too quickly and missed the fish!  For the rest of the day we caught more Brown Trout than either Trent or I could possible count with light fly rods and tippet on #16 Adams and #16 Elk Hair Caddis.  Just a fantastic way to end a great trip.
