One Fishy Dude

OCTOBER 01, 2015

Some people are just “Fishy,” and Todd from Denver, Co., is one “Fishy Dude!” We had the pleasure of taking him fly fishing last weekend on the Little Red River. Todd has traveled a bunch and fished a lot of water particularly out west where in Montana he worked one summer in a fly shop. He is not just an excellent fly caster; he is an all around excellent fly fisher. He can drift a fly as well as anyone we have seen in a long time, he reads the water well and can see fish like an eagle.

Now that we have given Todd the big head, let’s talk about the fly fishing.  As you can see from the photos, the Little Red River is absolutely beautiful right now and the trees are just beginning to show a hint of fall colors and our water is cold and clear.  It is shaping up to be a great fall fishing season.  We enjoyed wonderful weather all weekend.  On Sunday we took the drift boat way down river and did a short four mile float but we really worked the water slowly and fished it hard.

We started early with the streamer rod for the first hour and a half before the sun got on the water.  The best streamer pattern was a Chuck’s Chunk and Todd caught a number of nice fat rainbows.  As the sun got on the water we switched up to a nymph rig and the fishing continued to improve with a bunch of nice rainbows taken primarily on #14 RG/PT Cruisers, Born’s Hairy Legged Sowbugs and #16 Norfork Special.  At noon we did a little grilling on the river and just enjoyed a nice lunch and beautiful fall day on the river.  Late in the afternoon we ran into some rising fish and a #20 Parachute Adams turned several small Rainbows sort making it a complete fly pattern day.  On the very last little riffle of the day Todd hooked up a stud slot limit Rainbow on a #14 RG/PT Cruiser but unfortunately we did not get a photo before the fish was released.  Great end to a really good fly fishing drift boat trip with a really “Fishy Dude!”
